Great Great Great (2017)

Thursday February 15, 2018 – 7:30 PM
Canadian Indie Film Series

Presented by A71 Entertainment

Directed by Adam Garnet Jones

Rating 14A

Actress/Writer/Producer Sarah Kolasky and Writer/Director Adam Garnet Jones will be in attendance for a post-screening Q&A.

Most relationship movies are about fiery beginnings and endings, but the reality is that most of us are somewhere in the middle. Our relationships aren’t underscored by symphonies of strings and romantic declarations, and they don’t end in a murderous rage. They’re just fine, most of the time. Until they’re not.

At the deliciously queasy core of Great Great Great is the lead performance by newcomer Sarah Kolasky, who delivers a vulnerable and deeply relatable portrait of a woman who makes us squirm with discomfort while asking us to love some of the most unlovable parts of ourselves.

Love Jacked (2018)

Thursday April 12, 2018 – 7:30 PM
Canadian Indie Film Series

Presented by A71 Entertainment

Rating PG

Starring: Keith David (Greenleaf), Amber Stevens West (22 Jump Street), Mike Epps (Resident Evil, The Hangover), Shamier Anderson (Wynonna Earp), Marla Gibbs (The Jeffersons), Lyriq Bent (She’s Gotta Have It)

Post-screening Q&A with Director Alfons Adetuyi

MAYA (Amber Stephens West) is headstrong with artistic ambitions, a strong contrast to what her father ED (Keith David) wants: a dutiful daughter to run the family hardware store. Ed is shocked when Maya takes her assertions of independence a step further and decides to travel to Africa.

While looking for inspiration, she meets MTUMBIE (Demetrius Grosse), an African charmer who sweeps her into a whirlwind romance. Before she knows what’s happening, she and Mtumbie are engaged and her father is furiously trying to persuade her to forget Africa and come home. This hardens her resolve to go ahead with the marriage until she finds Mtumbie in bed with another woman. Heartbroken, she flies home and is met by her father’s smug, “I told you so”. Instead of admitting that her father was right, she tries to save face and tells her family the wedding is on!

LOVE JACKED is a sophisticated small town Romantic Comedy with a twist: it involves a fake wedding, a fake funeral and a love triangle spanning two continents: North America and Africa. OK it has a lot of twists and a few turns, but it’s told in the tradition of classic Romantic Comedies such as THE FATHER OF THE BRIDE with a strong female protagonist and an overbearing father with African-American twists.

As she fights for survival within this brutal place, she finds allies who are rebelling against the rule of a self-appointed religious despot who demands allegiance to an all-powerful god called “Mother Darken.” Eve and her allies must fight with everything they have if they are to have any hope of surviving the horrors Darken has in store for them.
